Embryo, a German world music band, was founded in 1969 by Christian Burchard. The group began as a jazz-rock ensemble and evolved into a collective that incorporated various musical styles from around the world. Initially active as a jazz musician in the 1960s, Burchard played piano, trombone, and vibraphone before forming Embryo with Edgar Hofmann and Lothar Meid. The band's early releases included Opal (1970) and "Tausendfüßler" (1971), which gained radio play. Over the years, Embryo collaborated with numerous musicians, including Charlie Mariano, Mal Waldron, and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. In 2008, Embryo received the Ruth World Music Award for their lifetime achievement. Following Christian Burchard's death in January 2018, his daughter Marja took over the band's leadership, continuing its legacy with new elements and musicians.
