Sens Unik is a Swiss hip-hop group formed in 1987 in Renens, near Lausanne, by Carlos Leal (rapper), Just One (DJ/producer) and Rade (beatboxer). The trio later added Deborah (Sista D) on vocals, Bio on drums and percussion, and Osez on dance and rap, creating a collective rooted in break-dance culture. Their breakthrough came with the 1990 single “Nouvelle politik” and the 1991 EP Le VI e Sens on Maniak Records, which introduced the group to the French-speaking rap scene. Sens Unik released their first full-length album Les Portes du temps in 1992, followed by Chromatic (1994), a concept album featuring MC Solaar and Fabe, which broadened their international profile through tours in Europe, North America and Africa. In 1996 their single “Paquito” became the first francophone hip-hop video aired on Yo! MTV Raps. Their 1997 best-of Panorama sold over 40,000 copies and reached number 5 on the Swiss charts. Later albums – Pole Position (1998), Abracadabra (2001), Mea culpa (2004) and Générations (2010) – expanded their style with electronic and flamenco influences. After disbanding in the 2000s, Sens Unik’s music remained influential in Swiss and francophone hip-hop, with members pursuing solo careers in music, production, and film.
