Paul Silverthorne, born in 1951 in Cheshire, England, is an English violist and violinist. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Clarence Myerscough, Max Gilbert, and Sidney Griller. In 1988, Silverthorne became principal viola of the London Sinfonietta. Two years later, he joined the London Symphony Orchestra as principal violist. Throughout his career, Silverthorne has performed with major orchestras across England, America, and Europe under conductors such as André Previn, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Kent Nagano. He is known for his work in contemporary music and has given many first performances both with the London Sinfonietta and in recitals. Silverthorne has recorded for labels including EMI, ASV, Chandos, Albany, and Naxos. His notable albums include Beethoven By Arrangement Volume One: Works For Viola And Piano (2011). He has been a professor of viola at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
