Matthew Bauder, born in 1976 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in jazz and contemporary improvisation at the University of Michigan and later received a master’s degree in composition from Wesleyan University, where he studied under Anthony Braxton. In 2003, Bauder released his debut album, Weary Already of the Way. He later formed the long-form improvisational jazz trio Memorize the Sky. He is also the bandleader of the jazz quintet Day in Pictures and the modern doo-wop group White Blue Yellow & Clouds. With Day in Pictures, he released Day in Pictures (2010) and Nightshades (2014). He has collaborated with notable artists such as Arcade Fire and Iron & Wine, contributing to tours and recordings, and has performed on Broadway, including in Fela!.
