Precious Wilson was born on October 18, 1957 in Spanish Town (Jamaica). She is a Jamaican-British singer and songwriter who is best known in the disco, dance-pop and soul genres and is considered a defining voice of the late 1970s and 1980s. Her career began in 1974 when she joined the British band Eruption as a backing singer. Eruption emerged from the school band Silent Eruption in the 1970s and was originally founded in the UK in 1969. Eruption consisted of several members of Caribbean origin alongside Prescious Wilson and won a talent competition in 1975; Prescious Wilson soon took over the lead vocals. The band moved to Germany in 1977, where they were discovered by producer Frank Farian and sent on tour with Boney M. She sings international disco hits with Eruption, including "I Can't Stand the Rain" (1977) and "One Way Ticket" (1978), which enjoy chart success in the UK and the USA. After her success with the band, Precious Wilson embarked on a solo career at the end of the 1970s. Her debut album On the Race Track was released in 1980 and featured her voice in disco and dance-pop arrangements; the single "Cr-Cr-Cr-Cry to Me" reached chart positions in several European countries. Further solo albums followed, such as All Colored in Love (1982) and Funky Fingers (1983). Her well-known solo singles include "Hold On I'm Coming" (1979), "I Don't Know" (1982) and "I'll Be Your Friend", which charted in the US R&B charts. Precious Wilson also works as a singer on soundtracks, for example for the film The Jewel of the Nile (1985), and performs live around the world, including tours of Europe and the former Soviet Union. In the 1990s and beyond, Precious Wilson continued to perform as a solo artist and with projects such as Eruption featuring Precious Wilson. In 2022, she released a single EP of new songs under her own name. She lives in London and continues to work as a singer and songwriter.
