Carlos Goberna y su Sonora Borinquen was a Uruguayan tropical music group founded by Carlos Goberna in Montevideo on February 28, 1964. The band initially consisted of ten members, including three singers, three trumpets, electric bass, keyboard, timbales, and congas. Their debut album Así es Borinquen was released in 1964. Notable songs include "Elena, Elena," "Cometa blanca," and "Camionero." The band toured extensively across Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and the United States. They were awarded nine Discos de Oro for albums like Humor y Ternura and Camionero. In 2012, Carlos Goberna was named an Illustrious Citizen of Montevideo. Despite internal conflicts in 2019 that led to Carlos Goberna's son leaving the band, Sonora Borinquen continued performing until Carlos Goberna's death on February 23, 2023.
