The China Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1996 through the merger of the Shanghai Film Orchestra and the Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra, and is under the administration of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film, and TV. Initially known as the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, it underwent a name change to the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2004 under the direction of Zuohuang Chen. Under the leadership of music directors such as Yongyan Hu and Muhai Tang, the SPO has focused on promoting Chinese cultural values while also performing a diverse repertoire that includes works by Mahler, Bartók, and Wagner. The orchestra's discography featured recordings under labels such as Naxos, Marco Polo, and Yellow River, predominantly showcasing orchestrated Chinese music and compositions by Chinese artists.
