Samuel Abramovich Samosud was born on May 14, 1884, in Tiflis, Russian Empire. He began his musical career as a cellist before transitioning to conducting at the Mariinsky Theatre from 1917 to 1919. From 1918 to 1936, Samosud was chief conductor and artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. In 1936, he became the musical director at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and later founded what would become the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He premiered several significant works, including Dmitri Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and The Nose, as well as Sergei Prokofiev's War and Peace. He received numerous accolades, including the title of People’s Artist of the USSR, Cavalier of the Order of Lenin, and multiple Stalin Prizes.
