Frightwig, an all-female punk rock band from San Francisco, California, was formed in 1982 by Deanna Mitchell and Mia d'Bruzzi. The group's name originated from a slang term for a woman who had been out drinking and looked disheveled at the end of the night. Frightwig released their debut album Cat Farm Faboo in 1984 on Subterranean Records, followed by Faster, Frightwig, Kill! Kill! in 1986 on Caroline Records, and EP Phone Sexy in 1988. The band toured extensively throughout the 1980s across America, Canada, and Europe, opening for acts like Butthole Surfers and Redd Kross. In 2017, band member Cecilia Kuhn died from cancer, but her wishes were honored as Frightwig continued to perform. We Need to Talk..., was released in 2023 on Label 51 Recordings. Frightwig significantly influenced the Riot Grrrl movement and inspired bands such as Bikini Kill, Hole, L7, and Lunachicks.
