K5 was formed in 1995 by Kevin Shiver in the United States of America. The group, composed of Kevin Shiver and collaborators such as DJ KJ, Tammy Wright, Tessa Calina, Christian Michaels, Mickey Bono, and Tia Lisanne, specialized in breakbeat and electronic music. Their debut 1996 release, the single "Passion", entered the Central Florida Top 20 at number 11 and later peaked at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 1997‑02‑08; it also reached number 53 on the German charts in 2001. The track "Passion" was featured in the Kevin Smith film Chasing Amy and its soundtrack compilation. Following this breakthrough, K5 released "Lift You Up" in 1997 and a self‑titled full‑length album K5 that same year, establishing a presence on local radio station 106.7 FM (WXXL). The group released a 25th anniversary version of "Passion" in 2023.
