Vain was formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Davy Vain in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Davy Vain, born 1986, began his career as a record producer before assembling a lineup that included bassist Ashley Mitchell, drummer Tom Rickard, and guitarists Dylana Nova Scott and Danny West. The band signed with Island Records in 1988 and released its debut album No Respect in 1989, which peaked at number 154 on the Billboard 200 and received favorable reviews from Kerrang! and Classic Rock. In 1991, after recording a second album titled All Those Strangers, Vain was dropped by Island and briefly rebranded as Road Crew with former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler; the project dissolved the same year. The group reformed in 1993, releasing Move On It in Japan, followed by Fade (1995) and On the Line (2005). Subsequent albums Enough Rope (2011) and Rolling with the Punches (2017) expanded the discography, while Disintegrate Together was announced for 2024. Throughout its career, Vain toured the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, supporting acts such as Skid Row and opening for Guns N' Roses, and maintained a presence in the glam metal scene despite lineup changes and label shifts.
