Joseph Schmidt, born on March 4, 1904, in Davideny village, Bukovina province of Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine), was a Romanian Jewish tenor. His vocal training began as a boy alto in the Czernowitz Synagogue. By 1924, he performed his first solo recital in Czernowitz. Schmidt moved to Berlin for further training and his breakthrough came in 1929 with a radio broadcast as Vasco de Gama in Meyerbeer's L'Africaine. His successful international career included numerous recordings and radio broadcasts. Schmidt's diminutive stature limited his stage performances but suited him well for radio and film. He acted in several movies and toured extensively, notably a 1937 performance at Carnegie Hall with Grace Moore. His health declined during World War II, and he died of a heart attack on November 16, 1942, while interned in Switzerland.
