Russell Keys Oberlin, born on October 11, 1928 in Akron, Ohio, was an American singer known for his role as a countertenor. He began singing professionally as a child and studied at the Juilliard School of Music from 1948 to 1951. Oberlin's career took off when he became a founding member of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua ensemble in 1952, initially performing as a high tenor before transitioning to alto parts due to his unique vocal range. Oberlin's performances included roles in works such as Britten’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. He retired from performing at the age of 36 to become a professor at Hunter College, where he taught until 1994. Oberlin passed away on November 25, 2016.
