Elisabeth Rethberg, born Lisabeth Sättler on September 22, 1894, in Schwarzenberg/Erzgeb., Germany, was a notable opera singer. She began playing the piano at age five and studied at the Königliches Konservatorium Dresden from 1912 to 1913. Rethberg made her debut at the Hofoper in 1915 under her stage name. She performed over 100 roles, including Aida and Mimi. In 1922, she joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York for five years and also performed with the Ravinia Park Opera Company in Chicago during summers. From 1928 to 1940, she regularly performed in San Francisco and made annual guest appearances in Europe. She notably performed the title part in Richard Strauss's Ägyptische Helena (1928) and at the Salzburg Festival. Rethberg retired from the stage in 1942 and passed away on June 6, 1976, in Yorktown Heights, New York.
