Maurice Abravanel, born Maurice de Abravanel on January 6, 1903 in Salonika, Rumelia Province, Ottoman Empire, was an American conductor. He moved to Lausanne, Switzerland in 1909 and studied harmony and counterpoint under Kurt Weill in Berlin. Abravanel directed at the Paris Opera in 1933 and collaborated with choreographer George Balanchine before moving to Australia in 1934.
