Brazilian classical guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima was born on December 17, 1944, in São Paulo. He began playing guitar at age seven under his father's instruction and later studied with Benedito Moreira and Luiz Bonfá. At twelve, he debuted in concert in São Paulo. Barbosa-Lima's career took off internationally after his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1967. He performed with Andrés Segovia in Madrid in 1968 and later taught at Carnegie Mellon University from 1974 to 1978. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City and collaborated with Charlie Byrd, leading to a series of recordings for Concord Jazz. Barbosa-Lima passed away on February 23, 2022, in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro.
