The Checkers were a Japanese pop-rock band formed in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, by Toru Takeuchi and Fumiya Fujii after winning the Yamaha Light Music Contest in 1980. The initial lineup included Fumiya Fujii as lead singer and lyricist, Naoyuki Fujii on saxophone and flute, Masaharu Tsuruku and Yoshihiko Takamoku on vocals, Tohru Takeuchi on guitar, Yuji Ohdoi on bass, and Yoshiya Tokunaga on drums. The band's debut single "Giza Giza Heart no Komoriuta" was released in September 1983. This marked the beginning of a successful career that saw them produce numerous top-10 hits, including "Namida no Request" (January 1984) and "One Night Gigolo/TOY BOX" (March 1988). Their music quickly gained popularity, with many fans emulating the band's distinctive hairstyles and fashion sense. The Checkers were known for their catchy pop-rock tunes and energetic performances, which resonated with audiences across Japan. Notably, all of their single releases entered the top-10 in Japanese charts, with several reaching number one. Albums such as Blue Moon Stone (March 2004) further cemented their enduring popularity. The band disbanded in December 1992, but their impact persisted through posthumous releases and compilations. Following the disbandment, Fumiya Fujii pursued a successful solo career.
