Joyless, a Norwegian black metal band, was formed in 1996 by Rune Vedaa and Olav Berland as a side project to their main band, Forgotten Woods. Initially, Joyless aimed to experiment with styles beyond traditional black metal, incorporating influences from depressive black metal, folk, shoegazing, and proto- and post-punk artists such as The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Joy Division, early The Cure, and the Cocteau Twins. Their debut album, Unlimited Hate, released in 1996, showcased a raw, punk-infused black metal sound. In 2000, they released their second album, Wisdom & Arrogance, which marked a significant shift towards a punkier country-rock style. This stylistic evolution continued with the release of Without Support in 2011 on Ván Records.
