Marihiko Hara (born 1983) is a Kyoto-based Japanese composer originally from Osaka. A graduate of Kyoto University’s Faculty of Education, he left the university’s graduate program to focus on music. His work is characterized by a quiet intensity and explores the intersection of acoustic minimalism and experimental sound, often combining piano, chamber instrumentation, field recordings, and electronic textures. Hara has been involved in a wide range of media, including contemporary art, dance, and film, and is a member of the renowned Kyoto-based performance collective Dumb Type. He has released numerous solo works and collaborated with artists across disciplines, contributing music to installations and stage performances in Japan and abroad. His compositions frequently reflect a refined, meditative sensibility, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern ambient and electroacoustic techniques. In film, one of his recent standout works is "LUMINANCE", featured in the 2025 film Kokuho—a piece noted for its delicate balance of light and shadow in sound.
