Top-tier trance collaborator Jan Johnston (born February 21, 1968 in Salford, England) has provided vocals for some of the genre's best-known producers. Starting her career in the early 1990s as one half of Mancunian pop duo JJ, Johnston made her solo debut in 1994 with Naked But for Lilies. In a simple twist of fate, she ended up singing on BT's 1997 track "Remember" (featured on his ESCM album) after the US trance producer discovered one of Johnston's singles in a bargain bin in Manchester. Following the release of "Remember", Johnston worked with numerous other trance producers, and in 1999 was signed to Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Records. Although Johnston recorded her debut album, Emerging, for the label in 2000, it took 19 years before the album was released. The acoustic pop-led effort (which was intended to be remixed by club producers) featured a cover of "Superstar" by The Carpenters, which also remained unreleased until 2019. 2001 marked Johnson's first official single for Perfecto, "Flesh", which peaked at Number 36 on the UK chart. During the 2000s, she released a stream of singles and worked with trance producers like Paul van Dyk, appearing on his Grammy Award-nominated 2003 album, Reflections. In June 2017, Johnston released The Travelling Vixen, a collection of previously unreleased material written and recorded with DJ Manolo. 2019 saw the long-delayed release of the "Flesh" single for Perfecto Records. Emerging was released in November 2019.
