Home recordings have defined ZKM since the 90s. After the noisy debut Cosmic! (1997) mostly anchored to an extreme lo fi and shoegaze sound ZKM started expanding its sonic pallete to industrial and darkwave on Antimatter (Remastered) (1998) constructing short emotional pieces using samples and distorted guitars including a high octane version of Pavement's Zurich Is Stained. Outtakes from the sessions were collected in Outling (1998) including a cover of The Smashing Pumpkins' Daydream. In the dark and spacey Gloom (1999) chorus and phaser charged guitars were essential, most notably in the song Liz Fraser. Prototechnical (2000) continued the dreampop saga adding electronic beats. The album Bull Transcended at Seven (2002) is a song cycle and it has its title inspired by the Ten bulls of Zen, featuring folk and minimal elements and quite an introspective tone. In 2009 Zuecokimonomagnetico joined his wife Ticha Mercado and they named themselves The Paintings. They have released Art-Pop concept albums most notably Tiny Tales of Tides & Suns and Sunrise.
In 2022 ZKM released A Permanent Sound, a cycle concept album inspired by the Sun and the permanence of things, designed to be listened in circles.
