Erkki Rautio is a Finnish cellist and music educator born on October 5, 1931, in Helsinki. He studied at the Sibelius Academy under Yrjö Selin before training with Enrico Mainardi in Rome and Pierre Fournier in Paris. Rautio performed as a cellist with the Helsinki City Orchestra from 1957 to 1959 and later taught at the Oulu Music College. In 1965, he was appointed professor of cello at the Sibelius Academy, a position he held until 1994; he also served as the institution's rector from 1990 to 1993. Rautio is recognized for premiering contemporary Finnish works by composers such as Erik Bergman and Pehr Henrik Nordgren. He collaborated extensively with pianist Izumi Tateno on recordings including Pehr Henrik Nordgren: Concerto No. 1. His international career included recitals across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Rautio received the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Harriet Cohen Award in 1968. He remains a significant figure in Finnish string pedagogy.
