Joel Chadabe, born on December 12, 1938 in the Bronx, New York, was an American composer and percussionist. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959 and earned a master's degree from Yale University in 1962. Chadabe directed the electronic music studio at the State University of New York at Albany starting in 1965, collaborating with Robert Moog to design the CEMS (Coordinated Electronic Music System). He released notable albums such as Rhythms for Computer and Percussion in 1981 and Many Times... Acoustic Instruments And Interactive Electronics in 2004. Chadabe was president of Intelligent Music from 1983 to 1994, founded the Electronic Music Foundation in 1994, and received a SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He passed away on May 2, 2021 in Albany due to periampullary cancer.
