In 1956, Elem formed a band with Earl Payton and Freddie King, contributing to King's debut single for El-Bee Records, which featured "Country Boy" and "That's What You Think". Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Elem performed extensively in Chicago's club scene. In 1978, he released his debut album Mojo Boogie on Storyville Records. Elem continued to perform locally until his death in Chicago on February 5, 1997.
