Carmen y Laura, a Mexican-American sister musical act, were born in Kingsville, Texas. Carmen Hernandez (1921–2010) and Laura Hernandez Cantú (1926–2004) learned to harmonize together, influenced by the Mexican zarzuela. Their first hit was "Se Me Fue Mi Amor" on 4 Star Records. They later recorded for Ideal Records, founded by Carmen's husband Armando Marroquín. They were known for introducing swing and blues influences into Tejano music. They toured extensively until the 1970s and were honored by the Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame, Texas Music Hall of Fame, Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame, and Smithsonian's Folkways Records. They lived most of their adult lives in Alice, Texas, where they both died.
