Real name Michael Berrin, MC Serch is an American rapper and producer born in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, on May 6, 1967. He is best known as a member of the pioneering hip-hop group 3rd Bass, active in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in 1987 with Prime Minister Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich, 3rd Bass was one of the first white rap groups to be accepted into the underground hip-hop scene, distinguishing itself through cultural engagement and criticism of the industry, notably with tracks like "The Gas Face" and "Pop Goes the Weasel " (1991), which attacked Vanilla Ice. The band released two albums: The Cactus Album (1989) and Derelicts of Dialect (1991). After 3rd Bass split up in 1992, MC Serch released a solo album entitled Return of the Product, featuring the tracks "Here It Comes" and "Back to the Grill ", the latter marking one of the first recordings by the then unknown Nas. Alongside his musical career, MC Serch was involved in management and production: he played a key role in signing Nas to Columbia Records and in the production of the album Illmatic (1994). In the 2000s, he hosted the reality show Ego Trip's The (White) Rapper Show on VH1 and worked in radio in Detroit. A respected figure in old-school rap, MC Serch is known for his authenticity, his pioneering work in legitimizing white artists in hip-hop and his role in bringing to light major talents on the New York scene.
