Etienne Benjamin Steyn, born on November 24, 1978, in Germiston, Gauteng, South Africa, is a singer-songwriter who mostly sing in Afrikaans. His musical journey began in grade 8 when his father gifted him an old guitar, leading to the formation of his first band, Denizen, in 1995. Steyn's early career included participating in Battle of the Bands and performing at Woodstock in Oudtshoorn. In 2000, he co-founded the rock group Goose Gap, which gained popularity with the hit song "Sugar Up My Lollipop". During this period, Steyn also collaborated with various bands such as Not My Dog, Wonderboom, Springbok Nude Girls, and Prime Circle. In 2004, he served as the lead singer for Cutting Jade on a nationwide tour. Etienne Benjamin Steyn's debut solo album, Storie Van My Hart, was released in 2005, followed by Bietjie van My in 2007 and My Sonskyn in 2010.
