The Scene Is Now, a New York City-based avant-garde jug band, was formed in the 1980s by founding members Dick Champ, Philip Dray, Jeff McGovern, and Chris Nelson. The group emerged from the no wave scene, drawing influences from traditional Americana and experimental noise music bands like DNA and Mars. Their debut album, Burn All Your Records, was released in 1985, followed by Total Jive in 1986 and Tonight We Ride in 1988. The band's rough, lo-fi recordings gained a cult following, with notable tracks including "Yellow Sarong", which was later covered by Yo La Tengo for their 1990 album Fakebook. In 1995, the group released The Oily Years, compiling many of their earlier songs. The Scene Is Now continued to release albums, including Songbirds Lie in 2004 and Magpie Alarm in 2011.
