Nelly Miricioiu is a Romanian-born British operatic soprano born on 31 March 1952 in Adjud. After winning the 1975 Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens, she made her operatic debut as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute at Iaşi Romanian Opera. Between 1975 and 1978, she performed at the Brasov Opera House in roles such as Mimì in La bohème. Miricioiu left Romania in 1981 and made her international debut with Scottish Opera in La traviata. In 1982, she debuted at the Royal Opera House as Nedda in Pagliacci, followed by a 1983 debut at La Scala in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1989 as Mimì. During the 1990s, she focused on bel canto repertoire, recording numerous works with Opera Rara including Rosmonda d'Inghilterra and Emma d'Antiocchia. Miricioiu was awarded the Knight of the Decoration of Nihil Sine Deo and the Knight of the Decoration of the Cross of the Romanian Royal House.
