Yves Marie-Édouard Devernay was born on May 9, 1937, in Tourcoing, Northern France. He began his organ studies with Jeanne Joulain at the Roubaix Conservatory and later won first prize for the organ at the Paris Conservatory in 1961. Devernay held the titular organist post at Saint Christopher's Church in Tourcoing from 1965 until his death. In 1984, he was appointed as one of four co-titular organists of Notre Dame de Paris, which boosted his reputation and led to numerous recitals across Europe. He died on December 10, 1990, in his hometown. Known for his virtuosic technique and improvisation skills, Devernay's discography includes several posthumous releases, including Hommage à Yves Devernay (1992) and Yves Devernay - Improvisations à Notre-Dame de Pari (2000).
