Jacques Berthier, born on June 27, 1923, in Auxerre, France, was a French composer and organist. He studied piano, organ, harmony, and composition under his musician parents and later at the École César-Franck in Paris. Berthier served as an organist at the Cathedral Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre from 1953 to 1960 and at Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola in Paris until his death. In 1955, he began composing for the Taizé Community, creating meditative chants that became integral to their liturgy. Berthier's work with Taizé included over 232 chants in 20 languages. Notable works include "Dans nos obscurités" and "Wait for the Lord." He passed away on June 27, 1994, his 71st birthday, in Paris. In 2006, he was posthumously awarded the Jubilate Deo Award.
