Fall of Because formed in 1982 in Birmingham by B.C. Green and Paul Neville. The band initially experimented with music using a drum machine before renaming to Fall of Because in 1983. Justin Broadrick joined in 1984, introducing new musical influences. In 1986, they recorded the demo Extirpate. After several lineup changes and name transitions, Fall of Because reformed as Godflesh in 1988 with Broadrick on guitar and Green on bass, using a drum machine for percussion. The band released their self-titled EP through Swordfish label that same year, marking the beginning of their industrial metal sound. In 1989, they signed to Earache Records and released Streetcleaner. Godflesh disbanded in 2002 after Green's departure. Broadrick reformed Godflesh in 2009 with Green, releasing albums such as A World Lit Only by Fire (2014) and Purge (2023).
