Erwin Esteban Schrott Baladon, known as Erwin Schrott, is an Uruguayan operatic bass-baritone born on December 21, 1972, in Montevideo. He made his professional debut in Montevideo at age 22 as Roucher in Andrea Chénier. Following performances at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile, in Turandot and Aida, Schrott received first prize and the Audience Prize at the 1998 Operalia competition. He debuted at the Vienna State Opera as Banquo in Macbeth in 1999. His debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera occurred in 2000 as Colline in La bohème. In 2003, he performed at the Royal Opera House as Leporello in Don Giovanni. His repertoire included the title roles in Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, and Attila. Schrott released the albums Arias by Mozart, Verdi, Berlioz, Gounod & Meyerbeer (2008) and Rojotango (2011). He was named a Distinguished Citizen of Montevideo in 2015.
