Girlfriend, whose real name is Kenya Edwards, is an American R&B singer and songwriter who grew up in Mississippi. She began her artistic path with an early love of music that was nurtured in a household where a wide range of styles was appreciated, from reggae to jazz and soul. This eclectic musical environment gave her the confidence to approach songwriting without boundaries and to develop her own voice as an artist. Before committing fully to music, she studied psychology in college with the intention of becoming a therapist, and that background deeply informs her lyrical style, which is centered on empathy, emotional insight, and vulnerability. Her debut release, the album Girlfriend, was issued in 2022, before singles "Body", "Tell Me Again", and "Feelin" with Maiya the Don in 2024. In 2025, Girlfriend followed with "Obsessive", "Bon Voyage" with Tierra Whack, and "Come Thru", ahead of the release of her sophomore album It's Complicated, featuring the hit "Emergency", ranked Number 40 in the Radio Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
