The Kane Gang, a British pop trio formed in Durham in 1982, consisted of vocalists Martin Brammer and Paul Woods, along with multi-instrumentalist Dave Brewis. The group signed to Kitchenware Records, which led to a deal with London Records in 1984. Their debut album, The Bad And Lowdown World Of The Kane Gang, was released the following year and featured two UK hit singles: "Closest Thing To Heaven" and a cover of the Staples Singers' "Respect Yourself" which went to number 12 and 21, respectively. The latter also reached number 19 in Australia. The album was co-produced by Pete Wingfield, with backing vocals from P. P. Arnold and Sam Brown. In 1987, their second album Miracle spawned two US hit singles: "Motortown" and a cover of Dennis Edwards' "Don't Look Any Further" which topped the US Dance Charts. The Kane Gang performed the music for the "Ooh Gary Davies ... On Your Radio" jingle for BBC Radio 1, based on their 1983 track "Smalltown Creed". This track was also adapted for other radio personalities and served as the theme tune for the long-running Children's BBC television programme Byker Grove. Paul Woods left the band in 1991 to pursue a solo career. The Kane Gang disbanded shortly after, reuniting briefly in 2024.
