Sir Reginald Goodall CBE was an English conductor and singing coach noted for his interpretations of Richard Wagner and for conducting premieres of operas by Benjamin Britten. He studied at the Royal College of Music and elsewhere in Europe, and in 1929 became organist and choirmaster at St Alban’s Church, Holborn. During World War II, he conducted the Wessex Philharmonic, and in 1944 joined the Sadler’s Wells company, where he achieved an early success conducting the premiere of Britten’s Peter Grimes in 1945. He later conducted at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and at Glyndebourne. His final public performance took place in 1987 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, conducting act three of Wagner’s Parsifal with the English National Opera. He died May 5, 1990.
