Today was formed in 1988 by Frederick Lee “Bubba” Drakeford, Larry “Chief” Singletary, Wesley “Wes” Adams, and Larry “Love” McCain, childhood friends from Englewood, New Jersey. Their early collaboration began as the Gents in 1984, but after meeting producer Teddy Riley at an anti‑drug benefit, the group was renamed Today and signed to MCA Records. Their debut studio album Today (1988) yielded the R&B hit "Him or Me" (U.S. R&B Number 3) and the chart‑topping single "Girl I Got My Eyes On You" (U.S. R&B Number 1, UK Number 94). In 1990, the group released The New Formula, featuring the top‑10 single "Why You Get Funky on Me" (U.S. R&B Number 2) and "I Got The Feeling" (U.S. R&B Number 12). Following the release of their second album, the group disbanded; Frederick Lee “Bubba” Drakeford pursued a solo career as Big Bub, while Larry “Chief” Singletary, Wesley “Wes” Adams, and Larry “Love” McCain focused on songwriting. In 2010, the four members reunited, shifting toward gospel and releasing the single "Orchestrate".
