Earl Lee Nelson, known professionally as Jackie Lee, was born on September 8, 1928, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He began his musical journey singing in his church's gospel choir before moving to Los Angeles with his family in 1937. In the 1950s, Nelson started his career in doo-wop with the Hollywood Flames and later formed the R&B duo Bob & Earl with Bobby Byrd. His breakthrough came as Jackie Lee with the hit song "The Duck" (1965), which peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B chart. This success led to his only album, The Duck (1966). Nelson continued to release singles under various names and labels, including Mira Records and Mirwood Records. Despite later health issues, including Alzheimer's disease, Nelson remained active in the music scene until his death on July 12, 2008. His work continues to be celebrated, particularly within Northern soul circles.
