Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla George is a London based saxophonist, improviser, composer and educator. She was interested in music at an early age, learning to play the saxophone at the age of 11, winning a music contest which won her some saxophone lessons. Influenced by jazz and world music artists like Fela Kuti, Jackie McLean, and Charlie Parker, she studied under respected saxophonists Jean Toussaint, Julian Siegal and Martin Speake at the Trinity College of Music. In 2009, she joined the group Jazz Jamaica, who won a MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award in 2013 for Jazz Performance. She formed the Camilla George Quartet in 2014, releasing the album Isang in 2017. That debut was followed by her sophomore release The People Could Fly in 2018. Both albums were critically acclaimed, earning her a wider commercial audience and plenty of praise from fellow musicians. She was nominated as Best Jazz Artist at the Urban Music Awards in 2017 and 2018.
