Land Of Giants originally released their 12inch single of Cannibal Dolls/Seven Men in June of 1982. Little did the band realize that it would go on to be considered a pioneer of the Cold Wave Minimal Electronic movement. Nor did they realize that 40 years later they would still be finding new fans
The original press release from June 1982, announcing the release of land of giants debut single Cannibal Dolls/Seven Men, opened with the line; “land of giants - three talls and a girl”. It went on; “Their combined heights are twenty four feet and one inch. From this elevation they are granted perspectives that lesser groups can only dream of.” It ended with; “Their debut single is a rarefied and effortless blend of technology, timing and great height.”
Heady stuff – but then again, it was a time of style over substance. Now 40 years later, the original single along with eight previously unreleased songs, are now available and those opening lines still apply today.
The band featured Anya Varda (vocals), Henryck Jesiak (programs, synthesizer and vocals), John Tucker (programs, synthesizer, vocals and guitar) and Marc Wonnacott (synthesizer, programs and vocals). Aided along the way by a number of Toronto musicians who dropped by the sessions and included, the late Kenny MacLean of Platinum Blond, Jeff Packer of Boys Brigade, and Chris Tate from Chalk Circle.
The album leads off with the original 1982 release, Cannibal Dolls/Seven Men, then it veers off in new directions with the inclusion of 8 demo recordings made between 1982 and 1985.
Cannibal Dolls has been include on Cold Waves Minimal Electronics and used on the soundtrack of Dietland (2018).
