The Seahorses are a British rock band formed in 1996 by guitarist John Squire following his departure from The Stone Roses. Squire recruited bassist Stuart Fletcher and vocalist Chris Helme after seeing them perform at local venues. Their debut single "Love Is the Law" was released on April 28, 1997, via Geffen Records, followed by their first album Do It Yourself in May. The album featured collaborations with Liam Gallagher of Oasis, including the co-written track "Love Me and Leave Me". Shortly before the release of "Love Me and Leave Me", drummer Andy Watts left the group due to personal issues. The band toured extensively throughout 1997 and 1998, playing support slots with major acts such as The Rolling Stones, U2, and Oasis. In 1998, they began work on a follow-up album with producer David Bottrill, previewing several new songs during secret fan club gigs and festival appearances. However, tensions between Squire and Helme escalated during recording sessions in January 1999, ultimately leading to the band's dissolution. The split was officially announced on January 23, 1999, with a press release citing musical differences.
