Branislav “Lala” Kovačev (November 19, 1939 – September 2, 2012) was a Yugoslavian-Serbian jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader. Born in Kikinda, Kovačev began his musical career as a trumpeter before adopting the drums. At age 17, Kovačev performed with the Dixieland Ensemble Dinamo and subsequently became the youngest member of the Radio Belgrade Jazz Orchestra. In the mid-1960s, Kovačev moved to Germany, performing with Horst Jankowski for six years and later with Max Greger and the North German Radio Orchestra. He collaborated with artists including Chick Corea, Hans Koller, and Benny Bailey. Kovačev was a pioneer of Balkan Ethno jazz, integrating complex folk rhythms into the genre. He established the European Jazz Consensus, releasing the albums Four for Slavia (1977) and Morning Rise (1977), and the International Jazz Consensus, which released Beak To Beak (1981). His Lala Kovacev Group produced the Balkan Impressions series (1982–1983). Kovačev died in Hvar, Croatia, in 2012.
