Jonathan Segel is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist. He studied music at the University of California, Santa Cruz under Peter Elsea and Gordon Mumma, and later earned a master’s degree in music composition from Mills College, studying with Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Curran, and Joëlle Léandre. He began his musical career as a violinist with indie rock group Camper Van Beethoven in 1984, contributing to the band’s distinctive sound until leaving in 1989 due to personality conflicts; he returned for the group’s 1999 reunion. During the 1990s, he was involved with experimental bands Hieronymus Firebrain and Jack & Jill, joined Dieselhed, and collaborated with artists including Eugene Chadbourne and Sparklehorse. Segel has released solo albums such as Storytelling (1988), Edgy Not Antsy (2003), Honey (2007), All Attractions (2012), Apricot Jam (2012), and Shine Out (2014).
