The Pattern was formed in Oakland, California, in the summer of 2000 by vocalist Christopher Appelgren, former lead singer of the PeeChees and owner of Lookout Records, alongside guitarist Jason Rosenberg, guitarist Andy Asp, bassist Carson Bell, and drummer Jim Anderson. The group quickly gained traction with early 7" releases on Alternative Tentacles, Gearhead Records, and GSL, culminating in the EP Immediately in September 2001, which was issued by Lookout Records in the United States and Wichita Recordings in the United Kingdom and led to appearances at the 2001 Reading and Leeds Festivals. In late 2001 The Pattern embarked on a nationwide U.S. tour supporting acts such as The Vue, The Donnas, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and opened for X and The Strokes. Their debut full-length album, Real Feelness, was released in 2002 on Lookout Records (U.S.), Wichita Recordings (U.K.), and JVC (Japan) after recording at Tiny Telephone Studios; the single "Fragile Awareness" received a video directed by Shepard Fairey. Subsequent touring included dates with The Hives, The Datsuns, The Mooney Suzuki, and Clinic. Original bassist Carson Bell and drummer Scott Batiste departed in 2003, and the band disbanded in 2004. Following the breakup, Christopher Appelgren joined West Bestern, Carson Bell played with The Mooney Suzuki, Scott Batiste joined the metal band Saviours, and Andy Asp and Jim Anderson performed together in SMOKERS.
