David Behrman, born August 16, 1937 in Austria, is an American composer known for his pioneering work in computer music. He attended Harvard University and Columbia University. In the early 1960s, Behrman produced Columbia Records' Music of our Time series, which included the first recording of Terry Riley's "In C" (1964). In 1966, he co-founded Sonic Arts Union with Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, and Gordon Mumma. Behrman composed music for Merce Cunningham's dances including Walkaround Time (1968), Rebus (1975), Pictures (1984), and Eyespace 40 (2007). His debut album, On the Other Ocean (1978), combined computer music with live performance. His subsequent albums include Unforeseen Events (1991) and Wave Train (1998). Behrman has taught at various institutions, including Bard College and Mills College. In 1994, he received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award.
