Karsten Vogel, born on January 11, 1943, in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a saxophonist and composer known for his work in jazz and fusion. He started playing saxophone at 14 and studied Danish literature and linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, graduating with an MA in 1968. During his studies, Vogel co-founded Brødrene Vogels Kvartet with his brother, which won an award in 1964. He was a member of John Tchicai's Cadentia Nova Danica from 1967 to 1969 and established the blues-rock band Burnin Red Ivanhoe in 1967, which later became Secret Oyster in 1972. Secret Oyster toured with acts like Captain Beefheart and Weather Report. Vogel's other projects include Birds of Beauty (1976) and collaborations with artists such as Frits Helmuth and L. Subramaniam. He has composed for the DR Radiojazz Band, the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, and contributed to film scores.
