Robert Michael VanPortfleet (performing as Mike VanPortfleet; born 20th century) is an American darkwave and goth rock singer-songwriter, keyboardist, and guitarist from Grand Rapids, Michigan. VanPortfleet relocated to Tempe, Arizona, in 1978 and earned a degree in cultural geography. In May 1988, VanPortfleet established the musical project Lycia to record guitar experiments. Partnering with bassist John Fair, VanPortfleet produced over a hundred songs and released the demo tape Wake (1989) through Orphanage Records. VanPortfleet signed with the label Projekt and released the studio albums Ionia (1991), A Day in the Stark Corner (1993), and Cold (1997). VanPortfleet also recorded as Bleak on the album Vane (1995) and as Estraya on The Time Has Come and Gone (2000). In 2004, VanPortfleet released the debut solo album Beyond the Horizon Line. Later Lycia recordings include Quiet Moments (2013), A Line That Connects (2015), and In Flickers (2018).
