John Andrew Howard Ogdon was an English classical pianist and composer born on January 27, 1937, in Mansfield Woodhouse. Ogdon studied at the Manchester Grammar School and the Royal Northern College of Music between 1953 and 1957. In 1961, Ogdon won first prize at the London Liszt Competition. Ogdon received first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1962, shared with Vladimir Ashkenazy. Ogdon performed duo-piano works with Brenda Lucas Ogdon and gave the first modern performance of the Edward Elgar piece “Concert Allegro, Op. 46” in 1969. In 1971, Ogdon recorded the album Scriabin: The 10 Piano Sonatas. Ogdon served as Professor of Music at Indiana University from 1976 to 1980. In 1988, Ogdon released the recording Opus clavicembalisticum. Ogdon died on August 1, 1989, from pneumonia. The recording Rachmaninoff: Complete Piano Works was released posthumously in 2001.
