Paul Plimley, born Paul Horace Plimley on March 16, 1953, in Vancouver, Canada, was a pianist, vibraphonist, and composer known for his contributions to free jazz and new improvisational music. He studied classical piano at the University of British Columbia from 1971 to 1973 and later trained at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY with Karl Berger and Cecil Taylor. In 1977, Plimley co-founded the New Orchestra Workshop, which included notable musicians like Ralph Eppel and Gregg Simpson. His early works include Swinging Planets (released in 1988) and When Silence Pulls (1990). Throughout his career, Plimley collaborated with prominent artists such as Barry Guy, Wadada Leo Smith, and George Lewis. Notable albums include Sensology (1997), Everything In Stages (2008), and Ivory Ganesh Meets Doctor Drums (2008). Plimley passed away on May 18, 2022.
