Shyamal Mitra, born শ্যামল মিত্র on January 14, 1929, in Naihati, India, was a notable singer known for his contributions to Bengali music. His early interest in music was nurtured by his mother and local singer Mrinal Kanti Ghosh. Mitra's breakthrough came with the playback singing role in Sunandar Biye (1949) and his first basic songs recorded under Sudhirlal Chakraborty. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he composed music for hit films such as Joy Maa Kali Boarding, Jamalaye Jibonto Manush. He also produced notable films like Deya Neya (1963). Mitra's versatility extended to Hindi, Assamese, and Oriya languages. Notable songs include "Smriti Tumi Bedonar" and "Subhra Sankha Robe". He passed away on November 15, 1987, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that includes over a hundred Bengali films as a playback singer and more than fifty as a music director.
